The Texas Rangers are investigating a Gillespie County Jail inmate’s death that’s being described as an apparent suicide.

“It’s very unfortunate,” Gillespie County Sheriff Buddy Mills said Thursday of the death of Damion Schroeder, 37, formerly of San Antonio, Austin and Fair Oaks Ranch.

Schroeder was arrested by deputies May 5 for DWI and evading arrest, said Mills, who reported the suspect was involved in “a fender bender” on his motorcycle during the incident.

After jailers saw Schroeder tearing up a blanket, he was moved to an isolation cell to be watched on 15-minute intervals, said Mills, who reported Schroeder was found hanging there at 12:10 p.m. May 6. Schroeder was then taken to University Hospital, where he died Tuesday.

The case is being investigated by Texas Ranger James Scoggins, who couldn’t be reached.
