The Texas Ranger Service is currently investigating an in-custody death that occurred at the Duval County Jail.

Texas Ranger Jeff Rickel was called in by Duval County Investigators to conduct an independent investigation into the death of a Duval County inmate. The inmate, identified as Inez Trujillo age 42 was discovered dead in his cell Wednesday, September 10 at approximately 12:45pm.

Trujillo who was incarcerated on Sunday September 7th at approximately 6pm for an incident that occurred at his residence located at the 1000blk of Eli Garza Street in the City of Freer, Texas.

The incident, which was investigated by the Freer Police Department, involved an altercation between Trujillo and his live-in girlfriend.

During the investigation, investigating officers developed probable cause determining that Trujillo had assaulted his live-in girlfriend and interfered with her placing a 911 call to the Freer Police Department. Trujillo was subsequently arrested and charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Interfering with an Emergency Telephone Call.

Trujillo was transported and booked into the Duval County Jail pending a magistrate’s hearing and setting of bond.

On Monday Sept. 8, Duval County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Sylvia Lazo ordered an Emergency Protective Order protecting Trujillo’s live-in girlfriend by limiting his contact with her. Trujillo was unable to make bond for the accused offenses he was being charged with.

Trujillo, who was alone in his cell, was taken out of general population on Tuesday September 9th and placed in an isolation cell after becoming sick.

No foul-play is suspected in the death and it appears Trujillo died in his sleep. Trujillo’s body has been taken to the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s office to conduct an autopsy and determine cause of death.

Duval County Investigator, Alan Gonzalez, is assisting Ranger Rickel with his investigation.

The investigation being conducted by the Texas Ranger Service is routine in situations where there is an in-custody death at a county jail. As per Jail Standards the death has also been reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
