Vague Jail Standards Have Real-life Consequences

Jan 10th, 2021 | Category: In The News
In this excellent piece in the Houston Chronicle, Texas Jail Project’s co-founder Diana Claitor, points out that “vague standards have real-life consequences.” For example, she says, the medical standards permit jails to use virtually any medical professional, including those with extremely limited training or expertise, as a facility’s chief medical official.
She goes to point out  there are still cases in which pregnant women were shackled after giving birth, or other instances when jailers did not recognize women were in labor, leading to dangerous births.
