Gabriela Barahona Program Associate

Gabriela Barahona

A native Houstonian and proud Honduran-American, Gabriela found her voice in community activism. Though her professional background is in administrative support and logistics, she serves as a grassroots organizer in her hometown around the climate crisis and mass incarceration. Gabriela also volunteers with Restoring Justice as an aftercare volunteer, connecting recently released folks from Harris county jail to community resources, and serving as a personal advocate.

Gabriela’s passion and commitment to social justice developed as her own family was impacted by immigration policies and then incarceration. The experience of trying to navigate an opaque, resource-starved system on behalf of her incarcerated brother led her to understand the difficulties so many families face as they search for help and answers. Gabriela firmly believes that no one should be criminalized for being poor, disabled, or systemically marginalized.

Gabriela joined Texas Jail Project in September 2020 to serve as a Program Associate, working primarily in Harris and surrounding counties on TJP’s COVID-19 response work.
